You have inadvertently stumbled onto one of the more lengthy disputes in the
history of the Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia community has discussed
the relationship between the Moldovan and Romanian languages in depth,
including the 1989 Moldovan political edict. The consensus decision, while
recognizing the general linguistic consensus that Moldovan and Romanian are
the same language, was to offer both Moldovan and Romanian encyclopedias, the
Moldovan one with the Cyrillic transcription and the Romanian one in the Latin
transcription. The reasons why the Latin transcription is called Romanian and
not Moldovan are at least twofold: first, because Romanian has always been
written in a Latin transcription (unlike Moldovan), and second, because even
most Moldovans acknowledge that Moldovan really is Romanian (and in fact there
is a movement within Moldova to replace the official name of the language in
the Moldovan constitution with Romanian). The Cyrillic transcription is
called Moldovan because, unlike Romanian, is has been used in the past and is
still used by some people, and that is the only name which has ever been
applied to Romanian (or Moldovan) when written in a Cyrillic alphabet.

This issue has been discussed at length in the community and a decision has
been reached as detailed above. It is extremely unlikely that the community
will wish to revisit that decision.

Yours sincerely,
