aderarea la nato este oarecum controversata in ucraina, si a fost destul de controversata in spania in anii 80. pe atunci, chiar si javier solana (ministru educatiei, apoi de externe in guvernul socialist) se opunea includerii spaniei in NATO (iar in anii 90 fostul adversar NATO a devenit si secretar general al aliantei). mai jos vedeti cateva remarci interesante despre controversele din anii 80 in spania – de la colegul meu jose-ignacio torreblanca . discutia a fost initiata dupa acest post de stanislav secrieru.
Just checked, democracy was regained in 1978 and everybody wanted to go back to Europe and the West.

In 1978, 15% were against NATO
In 1979, 26% against.
In 1981, when we joined, 43% was against, mainly because the Socialist Party opposed and the center-right government was unpopular.
In 1982, the socialists won, with the promise to hold a referendum
In 1985, five years later, 46% was against membership and only 16% in favour.
In March 1986 we had a referendum. PM Gonzalez threatened to resign if the no prevailed. Polls before the referendum showed 1/3 in favour 1/3 against and 1/3 undecided.
The final result was 52,49 in favour with a turnout of 59%.

So, the Socialist Party made a major mistake, first they convinced Spaniards to oppose NATO, then they had to convince them to vote for it, but only under the condition that American F-16 401 squadron will withdraw from Madrid, Spain will not be integrated in the military structure, and no nuclear weapons will be stored in Spain. We changed that in 1998, when we realized that new members loved the alliance and that Spain was going to be marginalized and decided to integrate in the military structure.
