"We all know that both Georgia and Russia (with South Ossetia) are responsible for escalating the game around the conflicts zones and ruthlessly rushing into a downward spiral of militarisation of the conflicts zones, particularly after Kosovo’s declaration of independence and Georgia’s perceived moves towards NATO in the first half of 2008."

Good post. Too often I think the discussion is split between those afraid to irritate Russia, and those whishing to state an example in the face of Russia.

The EU would do much better not to care about Russia, but rather about principles of democracy. But in stead Bruxelles wants to play the big boys' game of geopolitics...

Georgia is one sad example of this. Obviously the EU was trying to be with Georgia no matterhow Saakashvili ran the country. And of course thy failed, since a military EU intervention against Russia is not really thinkable, whereas a Russian intervention against Georgia is.

Another sad example of putting principles aside for geopolitical concerns is the mistreatment of Turkey, who is not accepted/rejected according to its own performance, but on the whims of European politicians. If Iceland faced the same treatment it would make a scandal.

One could argue that Turkey is not Europe due to geography, but this is not really what the EU does officially either...
